If one were to conduct a survey regarding whether they like travelling or not, it would be most likely that people will say “yes” as it is evident that travelling is one of the hobbies that people will never get tired of doing especially since they love to experience, explore, and discover a new set of things, and to try the culture of every place that they find appealing in accord with their established standard.
One of the places that folks, especially those whose origin is from Region VIII, love to visit is the town of Calbiga. Dubbed as Samar’s “Land of Beauty”, it is a place home to various tourist spots that once an entity set his eyes upon would leave him in awe. These tourist spots are what lure people to keep on coming back and savor the taste of Calbiga’s culture.
One of the events Calbiga is well-known for is the celebration of the Pahoy-pahoy Festival held every 25th of May. The commemoration entails showcasing giant scarecrows that help farmers protect their ’palays’ from destructive crows that have been the number one enemy of farmers since time immemorial. Indigenous materials are being utilized in the crafting of the vibrant ‘Pahoy’, with the advent of technology, others incorporate a touch of technology in their craft to make a part of their giant pahoy move.
Aside from this festival, various people across the region, every time they’d pay a visit to the locality, they’d always find themselves uttering and finding the luscious delicacies that could only be found in Calbiga such as the mouth-watering “binagol” which is a sweet product made of “talyan”. It is a round-shaped delicacy that has a caramelized-like sugar filling and is often put on a “bagol”, hence the name, “binagol”.
Calbiga also serves as the abode for the 3rd tallest statue in Visayas, which is the Divine Mercy Statue which stands 120 ft tall. The said statue is erected in its full glory in Brgy. Timbangan Calbiga, Samar.
The ravishing municipality of Calbiga is also known for the breathtaking Lulugayan Falls which is often dubbed as “Mini Niagara Falls”. The place serves as a go-to-relaxation spot, especially for those people who consider themselves as aquaphile, this is attributed to the fact that the cascading waters and the majestic scenery of the place promise a reprieve from the pandering and bustling of life.
Calbiga also offers a venue for adrenaline-junkies to challenge themselves and conquer their fears in the Langun Gobingob Cave – the second-largest cave in Asia. The cave is home to magnificent stalactites and stalagmites, giant chandeliers, natural springs, deep pools, unique rock formations, and subterranean water courses. Further, the cave also serves as the habitat of bats, cave crickets, crabs, and hypogean blind fish.
Above all, the best thing that Calbiga could offer to its tourists aside from these picturesque and magnificent sceneries is the people themselves. They are the true gems and life of Calbiga, their warmth, gracious hospitality, and smiles that are carved in their faces every time you meet them that would make your heart feel delighted, and most especially their innate kindness is what entices people to keep on patronizing Calbiga even more, a testament that Calbiga is indeed the Land of Beauty
